MXI TRUSTEE NOMINEES [MXI AGM AT TAPUI MARAE: 21 SEPT 2024]
6 June 2024
The marae trustees secured 4 x 1 bedroom units in conjunction with Te Runanga o Whangaroa. They are located where the old kohanga reo building use to be behind the marae. This means more housing at home for those in need. Well done trustees.
6 July 2024
Ministers Kevin Herewini [Kiwi] and Mereana Tua, with Tiare Pomare in tow, rolled on from opening the papakāinga homes in Roto to blessing and opening these new units. All tenants are anticipated to move in pending last minute checks. They are really lovely!
6 July 2024
A gathering of 45-50 people congregated at the entrance of Roto Papakāinga on Saturday. With all lights ablaze the whole area was lit up with excitement as new tenants and their families, Shelby Young [Chairperson of MXI and Project Leader] her MXI committee members and contractors along with locals welcomed in the dawn proceedings. Kaumātua, Dover Samuels, led the celebration with a warm welcome by retelling stories and history of families who lived in Roto in past years. Anaru Kira also shared words of support to all in attendance.
Ministers, Kevin Herewini [Kiwi] and Mereana Tua invited others in attendance to assist in the morning service. Tiare Pomare led the proceedings to all six houses with taki Māori, Kevin and Mereana initiated the house blessings and dedication and our kuia Waiunupo Komene concluded each house visit with a final prayer. We are very proud to see new houses at last and are grateful to all MXI Committees, past and present, who contributed to making this day come to fruition. To our MXI Chairperson and committee we are grateful for the effort you all played in managing the builds and arrangements from start to finish. Kia manawanui. Kua pai haere ō tātou kāinga.
Tohaina atu rā ēnei maioha, ēnei kupu whakamihi ki ngā mema katoa o tō tātou koporeihana. Tēnā koutou.
At 6.30am with no wind or rain in sight, the dawn pieced through the shroud of darkness. Aside from not recognising one another in the dark, you found yourself shuffling toward the baritone kaumātua voice at the forefront. Alas! Dawn arrived!
A final farewell by our Kaumātua and Minster, a few words from MXI Chairperson to all attendees as this part of the celebration came to a close. A huge thanks to TPK, Scope and Webb Contractors for the work provided. We are very grateful.
All six new houses are undergoing final arrangements as tenants anticipate moving in from Thursday onward. The last two replacement houses are expected to be up and tenanted within 3 months. Our road and houses look amazing tātou mā!
MOVING FORWARD TĀTOU MĀ!
10 July 2024
E hara tāku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini!
After a 3 month stand down on all activities, as requested, we conclude that little has happened since. The marae is still unavailable to us to use for hui, communication lines are not open and transparent as we would have liked, and although we unsubscribed 70 names, in total, from our contact register [with love and without question] 784 members on Te Kupenga o Ngāti Kura ki Tai remain. We therefore conclude that our website is up and running once again. Please check back with us, now and then, for regular updates.

Tēnā koutou
I ngā tini ahuatanga o te wa.
Apologies for the delay in responding. Our proposed hapū hui scheduled for this Saturday is CANCELLED.
It was hoped that our membership, along with Dover and I, could attend the hui this weekend. We agree that robust discussions need to take place, but unfortunately, the timing for us and others does not appear to be on our side. On this basis we must cancel our hui date in favour of another date and time in the near future.
Apologies again, tātou mā. We will persevere to find a date and time that suits most.

Tēnā koutou
Members of our Kaunihera Whakahaere and others attended the Sunday hui on 10 March. Discussions there included items such as:
Ngāti Kura Incorporation and leadership. Who is leading this group? Who are the committee and members? What are their aims and objectives?
Te Kupenga o Ngāti Kura ki Tai. Led by Dover Samuels and Anahera Pomare. What are their aims and objectives?
Te Tapui Marae alliance to hapū. Who is leading arrangements on behalf of the marae and which entity of the two above do they support and why?
Meanwhile, while arrangements appear chaotic at home, who is currently leading hapū business on our behalf? Who instructs the marae trustees and tells them what to do? Who is really leading from behind the scene? Anyone or everyone? These questions are currently in play.
Interestingly, Matauri X Incorporation is the legal entity currently governing the land but who of the entities above will forge a meaningful relationship to help take us into the future?
While it might seem like a whole lot of 'silly business' or appear like there is a whole lot of bickering by those at home in the bay, and others seeking enlightenment, but should you look deeper to unpack things there is a bigger picture and purpose. Haere mai, hui mai, whakapiripiri mai!
Another date has been provided by Ngaire Pera to hui on the 20th April 2024 at 10am. It is important that hapū members attend to listen to what is going on so that when you do return you feel the struggles and have had an input into arrangements good or bad. We need to take ownership of our hapū that we recite in our pepeha. Don't let others do the hard slog and then you arrive later with 'brighter' ideas. Set aside personalities to enable real discussions to take place. Attack the 'kaupapa' so that it becomes robust! [For those that aren't sure of what I mean here, I'm saying to critique, analyse, evaluate the subject on discussion to ensure its worthiness]. Don't attack the messenger! This causes personal attacks on people and is bad form. Haere mai, huihui mai, whakapiripiri mai!
Please note; we will only hui if we have the numbers to do that. If there was a hui to not miss, its this one. Please email me to advise if you will be attending or sending a whānau representative on behalf to represent. Please reply to my email to advise on whether you are available to attend. Bring a plate to share kai. Do not give up whānau mā! We have only just begun!
Please note: if you do not wish to receive notifications, pānui or any other correspondence from me please unsubscribe and I will remove your name from our register without question.
A notification letter was sent to Ngaire Pera on 28 February 2024, in response to her email below, regarding the marae not accepting booking requests from Ngāti Kura ki Tai. As Ngaire posted the letter on Facebook, soon after it was presented to her, it was concluded that the notification has been distributed widely and therefore our posting of it here is supportive of her post-out and all others of whom she is accountable to.
We totally agree that a meeting needs to take place however, the timelines provided to us to hui falls on a Sunday at 1pm which does not cater for travel arrangements or work commitments of our membership as 87% reside outside of Matauri Bay. An invite was provided to attend an earlier hui on 17 March 2024 at 1pm which cannot and will not be changed to accomodate our request for an earlier meeting time.
Our Administration Team will meeting on Sunday, 10 March 2024 and confirm direction forward. Please bare with us as we confirm arrangements.
Please note that all members are encouraged to attend along with those of the Kaunihera Whakahaere who are available. 1pm start.
MARCH 1-2 HAPŪ HUI CANCELLED
Apologies for this late notification but all efforts to find an alternative venue to meet have been exhausted. We are left with no other choice but to notify you all of this cancellation. Please watch this space.
A series of communications provided and received
18 January 2024 email to Ngaire Pera [NP] re: Mere Apiata confirming our hapū booking for 1-2 March on 3 January 2024 and then cancelled it on 8 January 2024 stating we contact Ngaire regarding the cancellation.
25 January 2024 Ngaire Pera reconfirms marae booking for 1-2 March 2024
28 January 2024 draft minutes recorded at a Hapū Hui; it was reiterated there that the next hapū hui date is 1-2 March 2024
21 February 2024 an email reminder from Anahera Pomare [AP] at 11.02am to attend the up and coming hui on 1-2 March 2024
23 February 2024 AP response to NP letter of cancellation [see the email presented above]
24 February 2024 NP confirms a Hapū Hui forward on 21 April 2024
The discussions from this point are still in progress. Please standby.
It is important that we find a way to come together so that we can all voice our views in an environment that will result in us all working together as one hapū. Please keep watching the updates and stay informed. Meanwhile, look to prepare your whānau representative to attend the hapū hui once it is confirmed.
Take care and see you all when we do!
NEWS FLASH: HOUSE FIRE IN ROTO
It is a very sad day when you wake up and travel down the road to see our kuia Waiunupo crying on the side of the road. "What happened Aunty?" She replied all teary eyed, "someone burnt our house down this morning."
To those of you who are responsible. This is not the way to communicate your disapproval! We have an urgent hapū hui on Sunday, 27 January 2024. Please come to the hui and talk before taking things into your own hands like this. When you do this, we all lose.
The fire brigade were called out around 3am this morning. The diggers and two work vehicles have been blacked out with black paint. All work is on hold until a police investigation, which is in play right now.
Ngāti Kura ki Tai Hapū Chairperson, Dover Samuels encourages anyone who knows anything about this arson-vandalism to contact the police immediately. This behaviour will not be tolerated. Someone knows something. Please come forward.

8 November 2023 at 9.30pm [Invite from Mere Apiata to attend a hapū hui on 12 November]
There is a difference of opinion on hapū arrangements with some whānau and members. Ngāti Kura ki Tai have secured a marae booking on 2 March 2024 to clarify our position and to provide updates on the things in progress. The marae is available on Friday night to those who travel from afar or those who just want to catch up with whānau at home here. Haramai!
Please prepare to attend and participate in all discussions in order to work in unison in the future. We can do this tātou mā - together.
Please note that our new interim Communications Person is Emma Hēpi. Any enquiries to be made directly to her on 027 4820036 or emmahepi@yahoo.co.nz
To assist arrangements for 2024, we ask that all members please fill out the planning SURVEY [below] and confirm your registration by filling in the form on the tab above titled, 'RĒHITA'. Our current hapū register of 901 members recognises that 87% of our membership reside outside of Matauri Bay. The survey considers your availability to attend hui and the register confirms our membership. Both these concerns are important as they drive us to do the best job possible toward keeping you informed and included in hapū business. Please look to do these things as soon as possible.
*Most importantly, be safe in your travels and have fun with your whānau over the Christmas period. Merry Christmas from us, to you all.

Hundreds of people attended the 4am ceremony in Matangirau. The auspicious occasion saw the attendance of dignitaries, rangatira and the 'who's, who' in Ngapuhi and beyond. Many kaumātua and kuia attended from all areas ready to welcome the brand new buildings. An excellent display by all in attendance.
Te Whare Hui o Karangahape was full to capacity with guests overflowing through all doors. Speakers eloquently displayed the art of kōrero from pūrākau to genealogical connections with those in attendance. No gaps or spaces left as the wairua of the whare was lifted on high.
Te Whare Kai o Te Kaauta presented over 1000 meal packs by 8.30am. A huge marquee was erected to assist as the performance and unity of the hau kāinga will not be forgotten quickly. The hospitality was overwhelming with kaimoana treats and sweet delights of all descriptions.
The arrangement of all buildings and facilities complement all three hapū of Te Touwai - Te Kaitangata, Ngāti Kaawau and Te Whanaupani. The event was exciting, amazing and all the words to express the stunning characteristics of its people to signify a new dawn of new things to come.
A message from our Chairperson
Well done to Ngāti Kura ki Tai for our delegation to support the opening of Te Touwai Marae and the wharehui Karangahape. Our whanaunga organising passed on their appreciation of our attendance and support so early in the morning. Thank you to all. Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa.
Third delivery with 2 x 3 bedroom houses on board. The trucks left Huntly for Kaiwaka on Monday 10pm then Kaiwaka to Matauri Bay [same time] to arrive at 3.30am.
Not long now Aunty Waiunupo and your new neighbours will be moving in! The first 2 bedroom whare will be re-sited, to make way for a 3 bedroom whare, and moved toward the mailboxes in Roto.
Four repilers arrived to stabilise houses allowing for checks before ground arrangements [decks, power, plumbing landscaping, etc]. The repilers will be on site for around 3 days, this round, to put piles in for at least 4/6 houses.
A small gathering to celebrate a new beginning.
In collaboration with Danny Hancox and Robert Mihaljevich [Director] of Cavalli Properties Ltd, a 'breaking ground' ceremony in the subdivision was concluded.
A warm mihi to all those who attended the small service this morning including Pastor Eddy Harris [Snr], his wife Rangi and a few elders of the hapū and community. Thank you to all those who passed in their contributions and/or dropped off kai for the occasion. The building of the new whare, which Ngāti Kura can share once built, will commence in approximately 2 weeks.
Rain, hail or shine! They made it through! Yeehaa!!!
Although, some of us slept in this morning the 2 x 3-bedroom houses were delivered. A whole lot a mud around folks and some delays due to the landing pads being adjusted this morning but nothing we can't handle. Give them a moment to settle as I'm sure we can manage around it. Well done to the labourers and truck drivers with high winds and heavy rain you guys are the bomb! Again, MXI and all your contractors ... thank you!
A little bit of hapū hospitality goes a long way!
A huge mihi to you Aunty Waiunupo for being the lighthouse for our manuhiri while they are here.
Your hospitality with all your goodies for breakfast provides our guests with a positive view of who and what we are all about in Matauri Bay. Now we wait for the next delivery of two houses next week. This will be the big one.
The second round of Te Reo Classes [Te Ataarangi method] starts today. Classes start at 5pm and finish at 7pm for those on Whiti 6 upward.
The beginners class starts tomorrow [Wed] same time and place. An introduction class will lead with Whiti 1-5 over 8 weeks. You must register first to ensure your suitability [to this level] and you can commit. Lessons are free however, a koha to our venue is appreciated.
Kura Reo classes commence on 6 November; venue to be provided to those registered. Again, please make your attendance known as a suitable venue will be found to accommodate numbers. Our marae is booked on the 6th Nov so another venue will be sought.
Our last wānanga reo is scheduled for 15-17 December 2023. Arrive Friday, 5.30pm and finish after hakari with a pack down on Sunday morning.
If you want to learn te reo Māori at home then come home! We want to strengthen whānau units to enable them to hold their own, at their own hui, on our marae. Here's the thinking. When you return home who will run your taumata? Who will represent your whānau at hui? If that person is you then hoki mai. We know that... 'you can lead a horse to water... but you can't make it drink!' Don't leave it too late.
Kia kaha tātou ki te kōrero Māori!
Thursday, 26 Oct i te ata pō [2am] ngā whare e rua stands at attention ready to enter Roto [Papakāinga]. He mihi ki a Tāne-nui ā-rangi.
A solemn call is sent out as the first whāre is aligned on site. He mihi ki a Hineahuone, Hine Titama rātou ko Hine-nui-te-pō.
The first whare touches down i te ata pō [3.10am] as the tea trolley with cake rolls out. Haumia, Turongo rātou ko Tangaroa takes a seat.
Stabilisers are affirmed as the second whare follows suit. Tūmatauenga rises with ease as the template has met its mark.
Second house aligned and timing at te ata hapara [4am] is perfect. Dark as night yet all is bright!
E huri haere ana a Whiro - the assessor! Making sure that all is well on all sides. The job is near done!
Footing in place as the whare touches down i te atatū [5am]. Tawhiri looks for his exit and before the dawn breaks its hometime!
Tama-nui-te-ra feasts on all that resides in his domain. Taniwharau Ngapuhi or Ngapuhi Taniwharau?
The two houses left Huntly for Kaiwaka on Tuesday, 24 October 2023. The road rules are that wide load vehicles carrying sizable buildings, must be off the road between the hours of 10am and 6pm. This saw the convoy of two big trucks, two pilot vehicles and Dan the Boss man leave Kaiwaka before 9pm to an early arrival in Matauri at 2am.
Dannie Thomas-Samuels, pou tiaki for MXI, oversaw the delivery of our new homes. With three other locals watching the arrival of our two new houses, them being placed on site, was indeed a wonderful sight to witness. History in the making! Acknowledgement to all the past and present MXI members and supporting whānau who have held the front line in the fight to get houses on our whenua for our families. Today is the day folks! The first of two houses are in and the others are on the way! Take a bow.
Overview
Its full steam ahead with regard to the building of the 8 new houses in Roto. Civil work commenced last month and the houses, to be built in Huntly, have started. Timelines were set for May 2024 however, Matauri X Incorporation [MXI] are hopeful at completing around January 2024 ready to be tenanted.
Hui with Roto Residents
A hui was held with residents from Roto on 22 September 2023 with 4 MXI committee members on the marae. The committee heard concerns regarding MXI's perceived takeover of the current infrastructure which was built by those residing in the area. While understandings were clarified, both parties shared views toward a remedy/compensation for work completed and funds spent. Roto representative, Eddy Harris [Senior] presented a way forward which is in consideration by the committee.
Shelby Young {MXI Chairperson] provided a schedule of the infrastructure upgrades that will be made to the Roto area to water, stormwater, roading, electricity and telecommunications. Shelby stated that they are not tapping into all of the old systems with the exception of utilising the wastewater septic system and wetlands that were established by the early LTO holders. It was heard that what is currently there was as required by FNDC or no houses in Roto would have been approved. The residents await a decision by the MXI Committee to hopefully, settle all past concerns once and for all.
* Please note that this item aims to highlight new development on the land for those who do not reside in the bay. MXI are the landlords on behalf of its shareholders and as such operates its business to satisfy its registered membership [not hapū]. There is a difference.
Ngā mihi o ngā tini ahuatanga o te wa ki a koutou.
I wasn’t prepared to notify the new owners of Motukawaiti, after the last cancellation where they had to postpone all their arrangements, and that a further postponement would have been embarrassing. As Chair, a decision was made to proceed with an informal meeting with our guests and representation with Cavalli Properties Ltd at a venue in Kerikeri. They too were disappointed as they were looking forward to meeting at the marae with all members of the hapū and developing a positive relationship with them relating to the development of Motukawaiti. They appreciate that there is a treaty claim for the return of that motu to the traditional hapū owners of the island.
I report that it was a positive informal meeting and the wish of the new Chinese owners is to respect the whānau and hapū that whakapapa to all ngā motu in the Cavalli Islands, including Motukawaiti. They indicated very clearly that they look forward to the day that they can meet us in our customary setting on our marae and experience the normal protocols that we extend to manuhiri tuārangi.
The meeting with Danny Hancox [Cavalli Properties Ltd] who is responsible for designing the architect of the buildings and layout of the Cavalli subdivision informed that the Whare Korowai [known as the Sales Office] will be constructed before Christmas and that Ngāti Kura and others of the community will be welcomed to participate and use the building along with its management after it is completed. I advised that it will be appropriate to bless the site before construction commences. I will be advising Cavalli Properties of our support and will organise the blessing protocol at the appropriate time. I’ve asked Anahera to forward an email both to the Chinese owners, Robert Mihaljevich [Director] and Danny Hancox accordingly.
Te Heamana / Kaumātua o Ngāti Kura ki Tai
Apologies once again to our membership for any inconvenience caused due to the cancellation of our hapū hui.
Mere Apiata [marae booking agent] stated, ‘It was reported on Sunday major flooding between the toilets and water tanks, so the system was shut off awaiting booking for the hydro truck in Whangarei to come out to inspect the underground damage’.
Other alternative venues were exhausted from:
the local kura kaupapa Māori: ‘no one was available to open or close up [kura Chairperson Ngaire Pera]
the local primary school: on site maintenance in progress [school Chairperson Dannie Samuels-Thomas]
a setup of a marquee and equipment on the beach front [not all resources available for hire due to short notice]
Lonsdale Park [venue in Matauri preferred].
We felt there was no other option but to cancel the hui, for the second time as this was once again out of our control. We are seeking another booking date and/or alternative arrangements to counteract any future marae cancellations. Please bear with us.
Kaituhituhi / Ngāti Kura ki Tai
34 students of Te Ataarangi ki Te Taitokerau participated in the Tōku Reo Kairangi programme held on Te Tapui Marae earlier this month. The students stem from two groups from Matauri Bay and Kerikeri and are tutored by hapū siblings Anahera Pomare and Sailor Epiha.
Matauri Bay students enjoyed the company of new friends, the variety in activities and differences between tutors and spending quality time learning te reo Māori in a total immersion context. Wow! A great weekend enjoyed by all.
Round two: commences on 30 October from 5-8pm on Tapui Marae. This is a 3-hour programme that occurs every fortnight. Classes cover karakia Māori, pakiwaitara, te reo catch-up, basic mihimihi and whaikōrero, waiata, mōteatea and kapa haka. Contact anahera.pomare@temanaotearoha.com to enrol. Kia kaha mai!
Round two: 10 week Te Ataarangi classes to commence on 31 October from 5-7pm in Matauri Bay. There are 2 classes one on Tuesdays for those who started in July 2023 and Wednesdays for beginners. Contact: anahera.pomare@temanaotearoha.com for an interview to enrol. Kia horo mai!
