Whānau grace the garden when and where they can. This year whānau rows are being distributed so that individuals or groups can grow their own kai. If this interests you make contact with the Matauri Community Garden on Facebook or see Tiare Pomare directly.
Community support
At a marae noho wānanga held in February 2021, 35 people in the community participated in a strategic plan exercise whereby the idea to initiate a community garden was mooted as an activity to improve community communications and to unite us all to move collectively as one. As discussions pertaining to the garden developed, a few months later, the idea for crop storage became a reality in our first harvest. A team of 9 primary students and 14 adults participated directly in activities to do with the construction of the pātaka kai and rua kūmara. We are very grateful.
This is now our third year [2023] whereby wānanga are held to maintain our pātaka and kumara storage pit and conclude what we will grow for the season, when we will plant and to discuss how it will be managed. Knoxie and Dorothy Wynyard are our newest contributors to the garden and the work required. We welcome their input and suggestions along with others for the upcoming season.
A project that was initiated from the Matauri Community Garden in 2021 with Tiare Pomare saw the evolvement of school children wanting to develop alongside the Māori Maramataka. Sharing lessons and understandings with other schools and them participating on the garden for the first two seasons caused a need for celebration. Puanga Rua is celebrated as its the prerequisite star that rises prior to Matariki, a month later. The 'rua' is added as its the second star seen in the sky as Matariki begins her ascent and Puanga declines. We acknowledge and celebrate to give thanks for all that we have obtained and that made it possible! Kia mātārā tātou!
Over 200 children from four schools [Matauri Bay Primary School, TKKM o Whangaroa, TKKM o Pukemiro and Kerikeri Primary School] participated in our 2nd Puanga celebration in Matauri Bay. With bouncy castles, go-karts, Māori performers including local soloist Tihema Riwai, gifts, hangi, games and housie, kai stalls and coffee, the day was a blast!
Special thanks to Matariki Ahunga Nui Fund for the late support and funding toward our auspicious day!
Our marquee was positioned at the mouth of the public car park in Matauri Bay. After an early dawn ceremony and lecture on ngā pakiwaitara, ngā mihi ki ngā kaitiaki Māori and feedback from individuals of sightings in and around Whangaroa on environmental changes, a small group of around 15 feasted on the hautapu presented to Ururangi, Waitī, Waitā, Waipuna-ā-rangi, Pōhutukawa, Matariki, Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Hiwa-i-te--rangi before setting up in preparation for the arrival of site occupiers.
The childrens activities, games and gifts promoted fun along with the stage performances which were the main hit of the day. Our objectives were to:
celebrate Puanga within the region
promote engagement in kaupapa Māori
promote tikanga Māori
provide a model for an annual Puanga celebration
and gather in our people.
